The Edith
R. Rudolphy Residence for the Blind is a unique program for low income
individuals with blindness and other disabilities.
Located
in the Powelton/Saunders Park area of Philadelphia’s University
City, Rudolphy recently joined forces with Mercy-Douglass Human Services
Affiliate to revitalize Rudolphy’s landmark building, establishing
a new concept in independent living. The resulting program is unique
to Philadelphia, and, to the extent known, to the nation as a whole.
The building, at one time known as The Pennsylvania Industrial Home
for Blind Women, has been in continuous use by Rudolphy for over
120 years.
Residents
enjoy the freedom that comes from living in their own private housekeeping
apartments, with as much (or as little) support in mattersof
their personal care and affairs as they need and desire. In this
collaborative effort, the Mercy-Douglass organization administers
the apartment
rental program, enabling Rudolphy to concentrate its efforts on caring
for its residents.
Founded in 1868, the organization was the first institution of its
kind to offer residential care on a non-discriminatory basis. Renamed
at the request of the residents in honor of a longtime, dedicated volunteer,
the organization was incorporated in 1976.
