For their apartment units, residents pay no more than 30% of their incomes,
even though the actual per-apartment operating cost frequently works
out to be two or three times that 30%-of-income figure. The difference
between what residents pay and what it actually costs to operate
the building
is subsidized by the same HUD program that supplied the lead development
subsidy (see “Our Building”). As for meals and the other
assisted living services that we provide, these are offered at fees which
vary in accordance with ability to pay, but which are nonetheless lower
than actual cost. We make our meals and other services available to all
residents
irrespective of ability to pay. The difference between our costs and
amounts paid by residents for meals and other services is made up by
contributions from members of the public. In the course of our regular
operations we receive no governmental assistance.
